The Spirit of India Fund
Following a generous bequest by Mohindar Dhillon announced in 2014, the WOMADelaide Foundation together with Michael Abbott AO QC and many generous donors established The Spirit of India Fund.
As founder of the Nataraj Cultural Centre, Mohindar had been instrumental in bringing the finest exponents of Indian classical music and dance to Australia from India for over three decades and this fund has been established to perpetuate and honour Mohindar's extraordinary cultural legacy by ensuring the continuing presentation of Indian cultural performances at WOMADelaide.
The Foundation works in partnership with the esteemed violinist and composer, Dr L Subramaniam the world-renowned Grammy Award winning musician, and Director of the Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival in India, to assist in the discovery and presentation of Indian classical musicians of the highest calibre at WOMADelaide.
Subramaniam ji had a unique bond with Mohindar and the festival, having performed at WOMADelaide three times since the inaugural event in 1992.

“[Mohindar was] a trailblazer in multicultural performance ... His relentlessness built bridges where none existed and fuelled enthusiasm for the highest quality Indian artists where once there was indifference.”
